General History

HMCS Ojibwa is one of three Canadian Oberon Class submarines, Ojibwa (SS-72), Onondaga (SS-7#) and Okanagan (SS-74).  She was originally laid down as Onyx for the Royal Navy, but was turned over to Canada so as to expedite acquisition.  She was commissioned on September 25, 1965.  The other two were commissioned several years later.  The Oberon class submarine has been a successful design from the outset.  They are currently serving in the British, Canadian, Australian and Chilean navies and until recently they were the finest and quietest conventional submarines in the world. Recently,   the Australian and Canadian navies have engaged in a comprehensive updating program which has upgraded their capabilities in combat to meet the current threat.  As a result, these boats still rank among the best of their type in the world.
