WAPPEN VON HAMBURG

Convoy Ship of 1675.  
The keel of the Wappen von Hamburg was laid during the in 1668 and the vessel was put into service a year later.
From 1669 to 1683 she was used as a convoy ship. The Wappen von Hamburg made voyages to Malaga, Cadiz Lisbon and also northwards as far as Spitzbergen. On 10th October 1683 fire broke out on board in the port of Cadiz. The powder room exploded killing Admiral Karpfinger and 22 soldiers.

In Cadiz and Hamburg monuments to the admiral can still be seen as a reminder that he also saved the Spanish silver fleet fom the grip of piracy.
