CSS ALBERMARLE |
|
The CSS Albermarle was built in a cornfield up the Roanoke River in April 1863. She attacked the Union forces at Plymouth, North Carolina, sinking the USS Southfield. She then attacked the Federal fleet in Albermarle Sound. Damaged during the attack, she anchored up the Roanoke for repairs. Lt Cushing of the Union Navy devised a daring plan to sink the ironclad using a pair of small launches armed with spar torpedoes. The attack took place 28 October 1864, and the Albermarle was sunk.
