YOUNG AMERICAN

Clipper Ship. 243ft × 43.2ft × 26.9ft 74.1m × 13.2m × 8.2m). Tons: 1,961 om. Hull: wood. Designed by William H. Webb. Built by William H. Webb, New York; 1853.

The name "Young America" belonged to an expansionist faction of the Democratic Party that advocated the doctrine of Manifest Destiny, and it was also perfectly suited to one of the strong, swift ships that helped the
United States' westward push in the wake of the California gold rush of 1849. Built for New York merchant George B. Daniels, Young America was the last William Webb ship to leave the ways, and many considered her his crowning achievement. Built for trade between New York, San Francisco, and Liverpool, her size and great speed ensured her consistent command of the highest rates for freight and passengers, and in an age when clippers and their captains were household names, she was also a favorite among bettors. Over the course of twenty passages from New York to San Francisco, she averaged 118 days, while in thirteen return passages she averaged 98 days. In 1872-73, she established a westbound record between Liverpool and San Francisco of 99 days, and between San Francisco and New York her fastest times were 82 and 86 days, the two fastest times for a ship with cargo on that run.

Young America also called at stops throughout the Pacific and
Indian Oceans, from Honolulu to Mauritius. On one passage she carried live sheep from Glasgow to New Zealand, and on another she transported 800 Chinese workers, known as coolies, from Hong Kong to Melbourne. Her other cargoes under the American flag included railroad iron, wheat, and general merchandise. Her last passage under U.S. ownership was from Portland, Oregon, to San Francisco and New York. A leak forced her into Rio de Janeiro for three weeks, but she managed to complete the passage in only 126 days between ports, or about 100 days under sail. Sold to Austrian owners at New York, she was renamed Miroslav and Buccari (now Bakar, Croatia) became her homeport. After two transatlantic voyages, on February 17, 1886, she departed Delaware and disappeared.
